Over the last 10 NFL seasons several interesting trends have emerged when it comes to beating the spread….  
Only against the spread lines represented 20 times or more are included....
Negative numbers designate home team favorites..

The lines below include all games from 1998 to week 12 of the 2008 - 2009 season....

How to interpret Table:  The best line for an Away team to cover is -13.5. This means that the Home team is favored by 13.5 points and must win by two touchdowns or more to cover the spread. Sixty four percent of the time the Home team does not win by two touchdowns or more or loses the game outright...!
Only 36% of the time the Home team won by two touchdowns or more and covered the spread....

 

 

 

How to interpret Table:  The best line for the Home team to cover is 7.5. This means that the Away team is favored by 7.5 points and must win by 8 points or more to cover the spread. Almost 74% of the time the Away team does not win by 8 points or more or loses the game outright...!
Only 26.1% of the time the Away team won by 8 points or more and covered the spread....
