Preakness - 136
Pimlico - Saturday, May 21, 2011

The 136th running of thePreakness Stakes will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Pimlico... On this page I will be posting some interesting stats from previous Preakness Stakes This is a very interesting race this year as Animal Kingdom won the Kentucky Derby in a very impressive and unexpected fashion. The competition seems to be weaker this year than it has been in the past. This offers hope that we might finally witness a historical moment - A Triple Crown winner..... As we all know, the last horse to accomplish this feat was Affirmedr back in 1978... In Animal Kingdom's way will once again be, Dialed In, Shackleford, Midnight Interlude, Mucho Macho Man, and a few who did not race in the Kentucky Derby...
Once again a very disappointing outcome as Shackleford holds off Animal Kingdom. Not only is it disappointing to me from the loss perspective and not picking the winner, but also from the standpoint that we will not have a potential Triple Crown winner again this year. The only somewhat bright spot in my analysis were the Exacta profiles which had the top three finishers in the top four selections. Below is my Preakness Stakes report:

Nehro, the Kentucky Derby runner-up, will not run in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday at Pimlico, owner Ahmed Zayat said early Tuesday morning. "It's a very hard decision, but I want to err on the side of caution," Zayat said. "He couldn't look any better. His work on Monday was absolutely awesome. I'm just concerned about him having four hard races in eight weeks, even if, outwardly, he doesn't appear to be showing it.
How Important Has Early Speed Been In Previous Preakness Stakes Races ?
Well, the answer is: Not that important.... Why? Let's take a look at some historical data... Since 1997, only one horse led at the half-mile (4f) mark and went on to win the Preakness. That was Rachel Alexandra in 2009.
Additionally, since 1960, only 5 horses have won in wire-to-wire fashion.... Animal Kingdom is not an early speed horse, so...
Are Post Positions important in the Preakness Stakes? Here are the Top-4 Finish Post Positions in the Preakness Stakes since 1991. Post Positions 2, 5, and 14 have not won any races since 1991...!!! Post Position 14 was present only twice over the course of the last 19 years.....
Below are depicted the "In The Top-4" Post Position from 1991 - 2010. Post Position number 7, for example, has been in the superfecta 10 times (50%), in the trifecta 6 times (30%), in the exacta 5 times (25%), and has won three times (15%)..The post positions that have produced the most winners are 4 and 6 with 4 winners respectively...
